Who Coined The Word Web 2.0 12

Feb16

Let’s just set this in stone once and for all now and squash all the arguments surrounding the origins of the term Web 2.0, shall we?

Contrary to popular belief, the term “Web 2.0″, which is widely thought to have been originated in 2005 during a conference between O’Reilly and MediaLive International, in reference to the dot com crash and the resurgence of e-commerce and e-services thereafter, was actually coined three years earlier by a Dermot McCormack, titled Web 2.0: 2003-’08 AC (After Crash) The Resurgence of the Internet & E-Commerce.

[excerpt] The first phase of the Internet economy has come to an end with the dramatic fall in the markets, however phase two (Web 2.0) is just getting started and will take shape much more cautiously over the next couple of years. In this book, Dermot McCormack clearly outlines the specific trends, challenges and opportunities for companies, consumers, the stock market and entrepreneurs …

O’Reilly, sorry, but I’m not going to give you this one. It’s a no contest victory for Mr. McCormack, with the three year jump on the gun and all.

Even if Mr. McCormack talked about web 2.0 but still he was the first one to acknowledge it. So I guess credits will go to Mr. McCormack. Web 3.0 is the next wave but not here yet.

  4. Web 2.0 does mean a lot more now than just the resurgence of ecommerce etc after the dot com bubble burst. There are a host of different technologies that are associated with Web 20.0.

  5. DS Fly Rods says:

Jeet, so are you saying that we are beyond whatever was beyond 2.0. I mean does that mean I’m surfing web 4.0 now? Hopefully soon I’ll have that chip implanted so I can surf without a board…. then eventually it’ll be, “look Ma, no hands!”

  6. web 2.0 was originally introduced by O’ Reilly there no doubt about it.

  7. Zombie Games says:

Argh, no more about this “web 2.0″…. :)

    • TYPELiFE says:

Do not worry, my friend. Soon we will be at Web 7.0, and you will be left in the dust ;)

Just kidding! Why don’t you like hearing about Web 2.0?

  8. Specifically, Dale Dougherty and Craig Cline first used that term. Web 3.0 is the next step.

  9. Jeet says:

I think web 2.0 as we know it today should be credited to O’Reilly. Dermot McCormack is just talking about a new phase that should already be over by now. :)

  10. HB says:

Wow, I never heard anything but the O’Reilly story. So wait, does that mean 2.0 was over in ’08? If we’re in Web 3.0 mode, can we finally stop supporting IE6?
