Using Twitter to Promote Your Music

Oct6

If you’re a budding (starving?) musician, today’s online social outlets could be the PERFECT avenue to fame and fortune for you. Everyone is pretty much on the bandwagon when it comes to Facebook and Twitter, which makes the possibility of your musicianship spreading virally a very real one indeed.

But, how about if instead of just linking to your music, you could require a “shout” from your listeners in order to download the tune? Doing so would guarantee you at least the exposure to the friend circles you are once-removed from.

Well, you can! Using Tweet for a Track, you can share a link to your social network that requires any visitor to republish your link to their friends before getting access to the audio file you have uploaded.

Tweet for a Track

It’s free to use, so get to it!

“Google Me” … Another Social Network Attempt By Web Giant?

Jul21

Yes, it’s true, as confirmed by Adam D’Angelo on the Quora discussion boards. Major players within Google’s infrastructure are making headway on a new project, dubiously dubbed Google Me. Google Me is another attempt (Orkut, anyone?) at getting their foot in the door of social networking, possibly even cornering the market if their application will really rival Facebook.

I’m curious to see what direction this social network is headed, and am eager to get my hands dirty in its features. I guess we’ll see what the big G is up to as more details unfold.

I stumbled upon an interesting article highlighting the reasons why Google might not be the right people to develop a social network, check it out: Pandas and Lobsters: Why Google Cannot Build Social Applications…

Using Images to Stuff Cookies

Mar22

Warning: Please consider the repercussions of using this sort of thing, it is considered bad practice and unbecoming of a respectable affiliate marketer.

You may be familiar with cookie stuffing already, but this cookie stuffing technique is far more effective than tagging a bunch of your own websites with your cookie, or even (shudder) infecting others’ web space with your links. Using images to stuff cookies (and rake in the commissions) is being used across the web by the black hat professionals, but there are many layers of complexity to remaining “safe” when you are employing these types of practices, so remember, this is a proof of concept! You could be banned from the sites cookie stuffed images are posted on, as well as the affiliate programs these images were crafted to con.

Well, on to it then, shall we?

It’s really quite simple, all that is required is a web server with php installed and mod_rewrite enabled so you can use a .htaccess file to cloak your image, which is really a script that redirects them to your affiliate link.

Create an .htaccess file with these contents:

<Files imagename.jpg>
ForceType application/x-httpd-php
</Files>

You can change imagename.jpg to whatever you want to call your image, it doesn’t really matter. After you’ve created this file, create a text file with the following contents, and then save it as the file name you chose in the .htaccess file.

<?
if(!$_SERVER[‘HTTP_REFERER’]){
header("HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found");
} else {
header("Location: http://www.yourpartner.com/a31dks3Zqc3x");
}
?>

When the “image” is loaded from a website, the headers and cookies from the affiliate link will be processed by the user who is currently browsing that website. If for some reason somebody investigates and directly visits the image, it will display a 404 error instead of redirecting them to your affiliate link, which adds some sort of security to this mechanism.

WordPress On Steroids Pt. 1

Oct2

I’d like to re-address the topic of WordPress plugins. Last time, when I shared with you my must haves for deploying WordPress based websites, I touched on the fundamentals. What I’m going to show you today is how to make your WordPress website soar above your competitors!

First, I must stress how IMPORTANT it is to have a MOBILE ENABLED website. If your website cannot be read easily on a web capable phone or mobile internet device, your website is CRIPPLED! You’re in a 100 yard dash and you’re JOGGING! If you’re equipped and capable enough to make your own mobile theme, the more power to you, for those of you who don’t have a designer’s or coder’s bone in your body, you have several viable options:

  • WPtouch is a hybrid WordPress theme/plugin. It allows you to pick and choose what content you want to display to mobile browsers, and based on your formatting, plops your data into a beautiful, easy-to-read, mobile WordPress theme.
  • Mobify is more of a manual tool, you kind of have to know what you’re doing, or at least have someone who does at your disposal. It has a web editor that allows you to style your mobile them yourself. Just using the default style it has after choosing your content won’t cut it. You have to work some CSS magic.
  • WordPress Mobile Edition will give your website an iPhone-like makeover. Not much room for customization here, but you can add more mobile user-agents via the settings page.

Now, this last little tidbit isn’t a plugin, but it definitely helps amp up your WordPress. Encouraging communication between yourself and your readers is an endless task, so give them more reason to respond to you by reversing the order of comments, displaying the newest comments on top, right below your post. It’s just a simple setting change, go to your Discussion Settings in the administration area, and choose to display newer comments at the top of each page.

Remember, the internet is always changing, and so are the ways we communicate on it. Show your readers you are informed AND HAVE AN OPINION about current events in your niche, and they will be drawn to speak to you.
